The index comprises 30 scrips whose weighted averages are taken. The list changes from time to time, but comprises market heavy weights. With effect from 19 August 1996 the Sensex has been reconstituted, as some of the scrip’s of the old
Sensex no longer command the same weight in market capitalization and trading volume. The new scrip’s are:

Shipping (0.78), and Arvind Mills (0.71).
